Peptide handling & storage
Receiving a peptide
Peptides are shipped at room temperature by standard shipment process (FEDEX, Post, DHL…).
Smart Bioscience peptides are delivered lyophilized. The appearance of lyophilized peptides is generally as powder. The apparent volume of powder can be variable between 2 tubes containing the same quantity, so it has not to be considered as suspect. Some peptides such as short sequences are highly hygroscopic so they can appear as gel and sometimes are quite not visible.
The stability of custom peptides is not defined by Smart Bioscience and can be requested by the client.
Lyophilized peptides are stable for several weeks at room temperature in their initial packaging so can be kept in this condition. Peptides can also be stored in a refrigerator (+4 °C) or in a freezer if you prefer. Peptides should be protected from intense light.
For more than 4 weeks, we recommend to store peptides in the deep freezer at < -20 °C or -80°C.
Storage of peptides in solution
Peptides in solution are less stable than the lyophilizates. It is recommended to aliquote peptide in solution before freezing to avoid thawing-refreezing cycles stressing the peptide (please require extra empty tubes when ordering – 2€/$2.5 per tube). Solution stability depends on the type of solvent, the pH (pH 5-7 is considered as optimum), the sequence… Peptides containing Asn, Gln, Cys, Met, Trp, Tyr tend to be less stable. Stock solutions of peptide substrates are best prepared in dry organic solvents to avoid premature hydrolysis. The stability of the aliquots may range from weeks to months. What is globally accepted for peptides in solution is that they are generally stable for 1-2 weeks at +4°C, for 3-4 months at -20°C and for 1 year at -80°C. Smart Bioscience offers to perform stability studies on your peptides, see section “peptide stability studies”
If you have to weigh the peptide, do it quickly because they are often very hygroscopic and absorb atmospheric water rapidly. In any case, it is better to ask Smart Bioscience to deliver peptides pre-aliquoted.
To reconstitute a peptide, see section “peptide solubility guidelines”
Handle peptides with care!
Smart Bioscience is acting on behalf its clients to produce their peptides. Smart Bioscience does not determine the toxicity of peptides so do not provide safety datasheets and can not be responsible in case of accident. Nevertheless, we recommend our clients to handle every peptides with precaution. Lyophilized peptides can be volatile. Peptides can be toxic for humans, animals or environment. Always use adapted personal protection equipment such as gloves, mask and glasses. Handle peptides in a clean and well ventilated room.
Now you can go, enjoy your experiments!
